The History of Arthur Murray
In 1912 a young man by the name of Arthur Murray, developed a love for partner dancing and from that passion took the craft from being reserved only for those with the skill and expertise to being available/teachable to anyone who wants to experience the social, physical, and emotional benefits of ballroom dance.
Murray embraced new and innovative ways to reach people. Along with teaching lessons in Eastern cities, he also sent dance lessons through the mail. Imagine receiving your dance lessons by mail! During the 1920’s, the use of radio allowed Murray to air live dance parties to his students. His innovation did not stop there! With TV he aired “The Arthur Murray Dance Party,” which aired for 10 years due to it’s enormous popularity.
In 1925 he married Kathryn and together they opened their first studio.
All the while Murray continued to use the studio to teach students in person. He franchised the business in the 1930’s and by 1946 the franchise expanded to 72 studios.
Today the franchise is run by a team of experts, who all started out as dance instructors. Two hundred sixty studios worldwide provide excellent customer service and fun dance instruction in a social atmosphere.
Arthur Murray dance studio has been operating in the Lancaster PA area for over 60 years. The studio was first opened in 1952 in the Stevens House on King and Prince Streets, where what is now the heart of downtown. A leaky roof there caused the dance floor to warp, which may have initiated a move to the new studio.
The move was to its current location on Fruitville Pike, just ouside of the downtown area. Lancaster studio’s longest active students were Anne and Rich Gable. They took lessons for 36 years between 1970 and 2006.
The studio continues to offer instruction 6 days a week, including private lessons, group
classes and practice parties.
We really appreciate the people who have decided to join Arthur Murray to learn to dance. They teach us so many things while we are teaching them the joy of dance. We have seen them gain confidence, improve their posture, balance and their health in general. they are truly part of our family. These are samples of the most welcome letters we receive every day.
Truly, the "Gold Standard" for learning to dance. Salsa, Waltz, Tango, to name a few. There's lots more. If you are intimidated by the idea of learning to dance (as I was), the Arthur Murray is the place to go. I did not know what to expect when I first got there, but was delighted at the level of personal attention and interest in how they strive to meet my dance needs. I now have a learning program specifically tailored to my dance goals. I look forward to every class!
My husband and I took our wedding dance classes at Arthur Murray, and love it. We had a great time, and ended up with a dance that was unique and fun. We highly recommend it, and plan to return to keep dancing and learning!
